Mesothelium and Mesothelioma –some interesting facts

Anyone who knows someone who has mesothelioma or mesothelioma knows the pain and suffering one has to endure this deadly disease. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. Although this disease is quite rare,it is very serious and the usually has a fatal outcome. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles,or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways.

The term comes from mesothelioma mesothelium, which is a protection on the shield and were most of the internal organs of the body like the heart and lungs.

Types Mesothelium

There are two types of mesothelium:visceral and parietal mesothelium mesothelium.

Visceral Mesothelium:Visceral mesothelium is the mesothelial tissue surrounding the organ close to the abdominal cavity.

Mesothlium Parietal: The parietal mesothelium is the membrane that the walls of the lungs and chest cavity surrounds.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that malignant cells are found in the lining of the chest or abdomen. This deadly disease can lead to abnormal growth and division of the mesothelium by invading cells and damage tissues and organs to fit. The cancer can also spread from their original site to other parts of the body. A combination of smoking with asbestos exposure significantly increases a persons risk of developing mesothelioma. However,mesothelioma has also been reported in some people who are not exposed to asbestos.

Who is at risk for developing mesothelioma?

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways. How heavier exposure to asbestos,the greater your chances of developing mesothelioma,plus the length of exposure time also increases your risk. But research shows that some individual with only a short amount of exposure have developed mesothelioma,also not everyone who is heavily exposed to asbestos develop mesothelioma . Smoking combined with asbestos exposure may increase the risk of developing cancer of the air passage in the lungs.

There are also reports and relatives of those who come into contact with asbestos workers are also at risk for developing mesothelioma or other asbestos-related disease. Family can reduce their risk of exposure to asbestos fibers and asbestos workers shower and change before leaving the workplace.

What are some of the signs and symptoms of mesothelioma?

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not be up 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Some of the signs and symptoms include:weight loss,shortness of breath,fatigue,acute pain in the abdomen and chest,abdominal swelling,anemia,to name but a few.

Mesothelioma Is A Death Sentence?

Twenty years ago the answer would be yes,but this is no longer the case. If you or a loved one is diagnosed with mesothelioma it is essential that you seek medical treatment.

What are some of the treatments used for mesothelioma?

It depends on the stage of the disease,the location of the cancer and the patient's overall health and age. Some of Mesothelioma Treatments include:conventional therapies,surgery,chemotherapy,radiotherapy,immunotherapy,and whether a combination of therapy and medication.
