Mesothelioma Variants

Sarcomatoid Malignant Mesothelioma what?

Regarding histology, there are four different types of mesothelioma:sarcomatous,epithelial,two-phase,and desmoplastic (sarcomatoid variant). In medical terms, the term refers to microscopic examination of tissue histopathology cells to better understand the different manifestations of the disease.

Malignant mesothelioma is the least common of the four sarcomatoid cell types. This represents approximately 7-20 percent of cases. When examined under a microscope, the malignant cells appear to be elongated fusiform cells which are irregularly shaped and often overlap.

Desmoplastic Mesothelioma is considered a variant of sarcomatous mesothelioma. This form is probably the hardest of all mesotheliomas diagnosed. When attacked desmoplastic mesothelioma or metastasis, cells may appear very soft and may be misdiagnosed as a benign fibrous tissue. Medical experts say this form should not be diagnosed by needle biopsy. It is important to know that sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma is often difficult to diagnose on the basis of histological methods. For example, cells of another type of cancer called sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung are very similar in appearance (as other properties) in sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma.

For this reason,if you are diagnosed with cancer and you know who have been exposed to asbestos at some time in the past, get a second opinion diagnosis may be important. Different types of cancer vary considerably in terms of prognosis and treatment options, and if it is misdiagnosed, patients can best treatment for their cancer.

Treatment and prognosis

Each of the four cell types of mesothelioma are generally treated the same way. Treatment is based on the specific type involved cells, but rather on the tumor location and stage of cancer. Each type of cancer is responding to very different treatment. In general true that patients with sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma have a less good prognosis in patients with type epithelioid, sarcomatoid cancers that are more aggressive and resistant to treatment. Unfortunately, the overall prognosis for all types is generally low,and the difference in prognosis between sarcomatoid cancer, epithelioid, biphasic and desmoplastic may reach as low as a few months.

Biopsy and histopathological

Patients undergoing a medical examination to Diagnose Mesothelioma will also undergo a series of medical tests to determine the location and type of cancer.
