How to Avoid Injury While Working Out

Exercise induced injuries are a common occurrence today. This is especially true to those individuals who are either A) new to working out or B) just getting back into working out after taking a break for a period of time. Everyone is susceptible to injury while working out, however there are a few things you can do to minimize the chances of injuring yourself while working out. Take the time to go over these few tips and try to remember them the next time you find yourself in a gym or at the track.

Stretch

I know you know this and hear it from your doctor, trainer, mother, brother, uncle, etc but this is literally one of the most important things you can possibly to do avoid injury. Most people who stretch don’t do it right. When you stretch, absolutely make sure you’re targeting the muscles that are meant to be stretched during that exercise. Make sure you’re feeling a good burn when you stretch that muscle. A well performed stretch should almost be akin to a mini exercise in itself. Far too many people stretch lazily and don’t accomplish anything but wasting 15 minutes of their workout.

Focus on Form

I see far too many people in the gym daily who have terrible form. This goes for everyone. I’ve seen pro-am bodybuilders who have the same form as the guy/girl who’s in the gym for the first time. Take a moment next time you’re in the gym and watch yourself in the mirror. It’s not vain to look at yourself while working out if you’re focusing on improving your technique. Trust me,good form will go along way in protecting your body from undue harm.

Watch Your Weight

Don’t be that guy. You know, the one in the gym who puts 400lbs on the bench press and screams like a Viking after every rep. The same guy whose arching his back and flailing his feet around like a toddler. Watch this guy closely because he’ll probably be missing for a few months from the gym for a torn rotator cuff soon enough. Weight and form combined are a lethal combination in gaining quality muscle without injury. Choose a weight that you know you can complete with perfect form. If you shake, wobble,or break form then choose a lighter weight.

Stretch

Stretching at the end of a workout is just as important as before. This will give your muscles a chance to drain excess blood from them back to the center of the body. Getting rid of this blood can stop pooling which will hinder your recovery. Stretching post-workout also ensures that you’re muscles get the proper,gradual,cool-down and you’ll thank yourself the next morning for it.
