home for his family,including my 4 year old grandson. i walked in and saw my son carrying asbestos in his hands. my grandson was playing within 10 feet. he was wearing gloves,but,no mask to cover his mouth and nose. it worried me,,,so i told him about mesothelioma,a respiratory/lung disease. and my concern that my grandson was right there,inhaling the asbestos. he told me to mind my own business…that it only is airborn if it is moved. well,it was being moved. can he and my grandson contract mesothelioma from this action,and,if yes,how long can it take to materialize into mesothelioma. thanks.. sheri
There are several types of diseases with asbestos. Mesothelioma is NOT DOSE Related meaning that it doesnt take much to get the disease. The latency period is over 5 years. A lot of the people working at ground zero got that. Thats why so many commercials on TV.
The other diseases like asbestosis and lung cancer etc take same years but they ARE dose related meaning that the more you breathe the more at danger you are.
Smoking is a major contributor also. If you smoke and work with asbestos,count on a short life.
Dont mess with asbestos. The guys who do,look like nuclear waste removal technicians for a reason. Full face PAPR masks,P100 filters,Tyvek suits or even doubled up,3 stage decon chambers,showers,Full containment etc.
Some asbestos is worse than other types. Thats just opinion of course because its not proven yet but it will. Blue Asbestos seems to be the worst.
Your grandson is probably fine,your son needs a kick in the butt and his hands tied up because he wont stay from it. And you need a contractor to remove it and properly throw it away. It may be illegal to throw it away in normal trash. It is here in California. Jail time.
