Health:Should we treat a French fry as a cigarette?
Fast food is a major health problem cost to society. This decade, including severe legal pressure, the McDonald's Corporation agreed to:+ Include healthier food. + Get more nutritional information about fat and calories. + Stop Supersizing. + Warn customers not to eat in their restaurants more than once a week. (Http:/ / banzhaf.net / suefat.html) Is it enough? If we treated a cheeseburger and fries as a packet cigarettes:–There would be no advertising –there would be a health warning –the food was over-taxed,and –if you are under the age of 18 years, you could not buy. But seriously, the fast food industry is faced with the same kinds of lawsuits asbestos manufacturers and tobacco companies face. How can we as a society deal with the enormous cost burden of fat and out-of-shape people? Is a French fry as a cigarette? What are your thoughts?
Very intriguing and thoughtful dilemma. I agree with the first answer to some extent, that means you have a choice about what you eat but have no control over the inhalation of second hand cigarette smoke. But –I feel that the food / advertising / media industry must bear some responsibility for the rise of obesity and should be enforced by the law to both collaborate in and promote a healthier way of eating. Initially –Asbestos manufacturers / suppliers were unaware of the health hazards of asbestos, but once it was known –the law prohibits it from being mined and used. BUT –the food industry are aware of how fat food drive people to a host of health problems and earlier death, and 'them'and 'law'not taking the appropriate measures to correct the problem. I think the government much more concerned about the effects of what a sudden ban on fatty foods would do to the economy this time –instead they save trouble for the future –'AS ALWAYS. Great question –you really got me pondering on this one. Including my website on asbestos or someone's attention. Ann.
