Mesothelioma Staging-What are the different types of production?
Staging is the process of discovering how far the cancer extension. Mesothelioma staging is based on imaging studies such as X-rays,CT and MRI. Treatment and the outlook for patients with mesothelioma depends largely on the stage (Range expansion),their cancer. Since Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common and has been studied the most,is the only mesothelioma, for the staging classification exists.
Staging system most often used for mesothelioma is the Butchart System. This system is based primarily on the extent of primary tumor, and is divided into mesothelioma stage I to IV.
Butchart staging system
- Stage I: Mesothelioma is present in the right or left pleura and may also involve the lung, pericardium,or diaphragm (Muscle separating the chest from the abdomen) on the same side.
- Phase II: Mesothelioma invades the chest wall or involves the passage of food esophagus (throat connecting to the stomach),heart,or pleura on both sides. Lymph nodes in the chest may also be involved.
- Phase III: Mesothelioma has penetrated through the diaphragm in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity). The lymph nodes behind the breast may also be involved.
- Phase IV: There is evidence of distant metastases (spread through the bloodstream to other organs).
Further staging system was recently developed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). It is a system of TNM system similar performances for most other types of cancer. T stands for tumor (its size and how it came to surrounding organs) N spread to lymph nodes and M for metastasis (spread to distant organs).
TNM classification system
- Phase I:Mesothelioma involves right or left pleura. It can also spread to the lung, pericardium,or diaphragm of the same party. It even spread to the lymph nodes.
- Phase II: Mesothelioma has spread from the pleura on one side to the nearby peribronchial and / or Hilar lymph nodes near the lungs of the same party. It may also extend into the lung, pericardium,or diaphragm on the same side.
- Phase III: Mesothelioma has spread into the chest muscle walls, ribs, heart, esophagus or other organs in the chest the same side as the primary tumor, with or without spread to subcarinal and / or mediastinal lymph nodes on the same side as the primary tumor. subcarinal lymph nodes are located in the place where the trachea branches to the right and left lung. mediastinal lymph nodes are located in the space behind the sternum in front the heart. Mesotheliomas with the same degree of local extension,as in Phase II has also extended to subcarinal and / or mediastinal lymph nodes on the same side are also included in Phase III.
- Phase IV: Mesothelioma has spread to lymph nodes in the chest on the opposite side of one of the primary tumor,or directly affects the pleura and lung on the opposite side,or directly extends into the peritoneum,or directly extends into organs in the abdominal cavity or neck. All mesothelioma evidence of distant metastases (spread to other organs through the bloodstream) or spread in organs outside the chest or abdomen is included in this step.
Although the TNM classification has recently developed the most detailed and accurate, the original Butchart staging system is still used most often to describe the spread of pleural mesothelioma. Understanding these classification systems for mesothelioma is important both for predicting prognosis, and evaluate treatment options.
Foresight factors at a younger age at diagnosis, good health and lack of weight loss are associated with favorable prognosis.
Mesotheliomas are usually three different cell types (histological analysis):1) epithelial cell type –has a favorable prognosis,2) sarcomatoid cell type –carries the worst prognosis and 3) Mixed cell type –the median forecast.
Patients should should also educate themselves about Mesothelioma Treatment Options and resources available to achieve and cope with the diagnosis of mesothelioma easier.
